Draft call Leverhulme Trust Fellowships 2023 round
The Institute for German and European Studies (IGES) at the University of Birmingham invites proposals from outstanding postdoctoral scholars to the 2023 round of the Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship Scheme. The IGES will work with successful candidates to strengthen their proposals for submission to the Leverhulme Trust.
Applications are invited from candidates with a track record of excellent research, but who have not yet held an established academic appointment. Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships aim to provide career development opportunities for those with a proven record of research, who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers. Appointments are dependent on the award of the Leverhulme Fellowship. Fellows are expected to undertake a significant piece of publishable work during their tenure and to contribute to the intellectual life and research environments of the IGES and the academic Schools at Birmingham of which it forms a part – the School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music and/or the School of Government.
The IGES brings together experts on Germany and Europe from a range of departments, including political science, modern languages, history and art history. The IGES was established in 1994 as a partnership between the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the University of Birmingham and is part of an active network of 20 DAAD centres of German and European Studies in Europe, North and South America, Israel and East Asia.
The IGES is based at the University of Birmingham as an interdisciplinary Institute within the College of Social Sciences and the College of Arts and Law. An important part of our mission is to support postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, and to bring them together with experienced scholars and international thinkers on Germany and Europe. The IGES research community currently comprises 17 PhD researchers, a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow, two Gerda Henkel Research Fellows, 9 associate fellows and 23 members of academic staff.
Research at the IGES is cross-disciplinary and encompasses the culture, history and politics of Germany in its European context. We will be happy to offer support and feedback in preparing applications to the 2023 round of the Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship Scheme. Candidates should demonstrate a record of publications appropriate to the stage of their career. Candidate also need to make sure that they meet the requirements for the fellowship scheme, available at the Leverhulme Trust website (https://www.leverhulme.ac.uk/early-career-fellowships).
Expressions of interest should be directed to Dr Thomas Brodie, Director of the Institute for German and European Studies (T.O.Brodie@bham.ac.uk) by 15 November 2022 and include the following:
- 250-word summary of past research
- 1-page statement of proposed research
- 250-word statement on why the IGES is the most suitable location for this fellowship, with a clear indication that a proposed mentor has been approached and is supportive
- 2-page CV including a list of major publications
Individuals who wish to apply for the scheme must first contact a potential mentor at the IGES. Only applications that have the support of an IGES-based scholar will be forwarded to the internal selection committee.
Successful candidates will be asked to complete a more detailed application by 23 February 2023 for forwarding to the Leverhulme Trust.
